Quote:  ‘‘ turning down feminism for gender equality is like turning down water for H2O’’

When I was first given this subject to develop, I was not too pleased with it because I knew that this is a controversial subject and that it will create a debate in the classroom. All I can do now is speak my mind and hope that some will agree with me.  Gender was forever a very simple noun meaning the state of being male or female, but during the 21rst century, it is no longer typically used based on biological differences but rather used with reference to social and cultural differences, what a person likes to label itself, or even without labels at all. Also during this century, the unequal treatment or perceptions of individuals arising from differences in gender roles or any common stereotypes was finally brought to attention. Gender inequality is the idea and situation that men and women are not equal, it stems from distinctions everywhere and in every situation. Women lag behind men in many domains, including education, labor market opportunities, political representation and in pay.

Although many things have improved recently regarding this subject, it is still a fact that women continue to be underrepresented in highly paid positions and overrepresented in low-paying jobs. Women of color and transgender individuals experience particularly higher levels of poverty and unemployment. When a person thinks about Female-dominated occupations, childcare and restaurant service are the first things that cross this person’s mind, yet men (the white men in particular) are mostly associated and particularly dominate highly lucrative financial industry jobs. We defines wealth as a person’s “net worth”, the total sum of your assets minus liabilities as in everything from an owned personal residence and cash in savings accounts to investments in stocks and bonds, real estate, and retirement accounts. Just by stating the fact that in 2018, only 256 women ranked among the world’s 2,208 billionaires shows how much of an inequality there is in the world even today. We can already conclude that women earn less than men, on average, in all industries.

Most people think that feminism is a group of people that believe women are better and stronger than men and want their roles to be reversed, many people that claim they are feminist think so too, but all of these people are actually referring to extremism. Feminism is actually the advocacy of women's rights on the ground of the equality of the sexes, so basically gender equality.

In 2016, 13.4 percent of adult women were living in poverty, compared to 9.7 percent of adult men. Households led by single women with children had a poverty rate of 35.6 percent, more than twice the 17.3 percent rate for households led by single men with children. Poverty is a particularly acute problem for women of color, affecting 21.4 percent of Black women, 18.7 percent of Latinas, and 22.8 percent of Native American women, compared to the national poverty rate for white men of 7.0 percent.

What can we do to fix these issues we ask. But the bigger question is; what can we do to make people acknowledge these issues. I’ve already come across many organizations and foundations that help promote gender equality and feminism, it is also wildly represented in nowadays TV shows and movies purposely to shine light on these issues in a lighter way in order to make people less afraid to tackle major subjects. Some schools across the world have arranged ‘gender equality’ days or fairs in order to raison money for some organizations. And finally many marathon runs or protest walks took place during the past years to seek awareness.
