Speech about Idea of Progress

The Idea of Progress is the theory that the different advances in technology, science, and social organization can produce an improvement in the human condition which means people can become happier in terms of quality of life (social progress) through economic development (modernization), and the application of science and technology (scientific progress).

Progress implies change and evolution and throughout history most of the advances have been positive. However the rhythm of progress seems to have accelerated over the last few decades and the technological breakthroughs and scientific developments are causing some people to question this progress. What effect do these « advances » have on our society? Do they always have a positive effect on the way we live?

To answer the question I will present 2 different advances which are science and technology progress.

1. Scientific Progress

First of all, when we talk about scientific progress, we will think of medical advances for example with new cures for illnesses such as AIDS and certain cancers that today saved many people's lives and will continue to save some more which is a very positive aspect of the scientific progress.

Scientific progress has had other positive evolution such as space travel which allowed for example Neil Armstrong to be the first man to walk on the moon but also full of other space discoveries.

However scientific progress also has some negatives development in which we can take cloning and designer babies as examples. Even if they helped some couples with fertility problems, clones and designer babies can’t be consider as real humans because indeed they are a product of asexual reproduction which means they don’t have biological parents even if they can look like depending which genes the parents have chosen.

An other negative aspect of the scientific progress is the performance enhancing drugs. They most often allow athletes to increase their physical capacities and their strengths in order to achieve better performances which has very bad repercussions on health and increase the cheating in all kind of sports giving a bad image of sport to whoever is watching and can incite some to follow these illegal methods

We just presented the first of the 2 advances which means we are now going to discuss about the second one.

2. Technological Progress:

This second advancement is therefore the technical progress that is surely the one that has the most change the world especially the generation of the twenty-first century. All these technical advances have of course brought a lot of advantages and facilities to the world today, some of which has consequences for this development with a lot of negative aspects.

For example, all electronic devices have helped us so far as we have facilitated our work, to communicate with everyone at any time and place that it is by written message, by call or voice messages. Electronic devices can join the internet that allows us today to perform any actions or searches online. So today, as long as you have access to the internet, you can do anything, send a
