“Dropping through space” is a visual imagery which portray the fall of the man. He seems out of control and his fall seems long.

“legs splaying like a manic puppet out of control” this simile describe the fall of the man. This simile make us think that the men has no control on his body and so he look like a puppet.

“he jerks to a stop” is a visual imagery which depict the scene as brutal. He is suddenly stopped by the rope which saved his life.  The fall is suddenly stopped by this phrase. It mark the end of an action.

“he hangs there” is a visual imagery which portray the man now safe ,hanging. The scene is surrealist a man is now hanging above the reporter. The reporter has no word to  describe where he is hanging, he is shocked he only use there

“a gentle giant” is an oxymoron which depict Peter physic and character . He seems nice but also as big and tall. A giant is a big men who seem bad and cruel but the world “gentle” give us a totally different idea of Peter.

“wide set brown eyes” is a visual imagery which describe his eyes. That embellish peter because “wide set brown eyes” is positive. That help us to imagine who peter looks like.

“painfully shy” is an hyperbole to describe the character of peter. Shy means scared of people that he does not know. The world “painfully” hyperbolise his “shy”, a shy can not hurt it is only a character.

“barrel chest” describe the physic of peter. Barrel means curve. That give us an image of close person, not friendly and shy. He seems isolated.
