SEQUENCE 1 : SPACES AND EXCHANGES

Good morning, today I’m going to talk about the notion of spaces and exchanges through the theme of Gap Year, a theme of cultural interaction between men and different populations

Each year ( ?), over 2.5 millions of young people in the United Kingdom are planning a Gap Year. Students can decide to travel abroad or stay in their country. It usually consists in volunteer work to help people. You can take a Gap year between high-school and college, before starting a job during a year or just for a couple of weeks. We will weigh the Pros and Cons of that issue. I will first focus on the advantages of taking a Gap Year and then, I will point out the drawbacks.

Taking a Gap Year permit students to have a break. It’s a different experience in your life, a hands-on experience. You can get out of your typical routine to think what you really like and to become a better person. It’s a rewarding experience.

By travelling you can educate yourself personnaly in discovering different lifestyle and meeting international people, to expand your horizons. For exemple you can meet people who were affected when the wall (quel mur ?) came down or meet people in need in slums in Philippins.

It also educates yourself professionally. Employers see that experience as a positive thing and it will make your resume stand out from the others.

Finally taking a Gap Year educates yourself educationnaly. Indeed it makes students more mature and adaptable, it gives them a sence of independance, a job experience to make money and it can help them to make a decicson about their futur projects. It is a good opportunity to see the real world.

Some colleges even offer students to pay their gap year. It’s the case of Tufts University and Princeton University. They consider it important because it can fight against students who suffer from burn outs. Students are all on an equal footing. They all have the same opportunities to succeed once in college, be more focused on their studies and more independent.

The I to I project allows volunteer people to help Kenia’s population who are in need. You can take care of  orpheans children or children whose parents can’t provide fo (food ?). You can also teach children who lack, who don’t have any skill. To do this kind of trip you have to be very motivated, a self directed person and some qualifications are required.

However taking a Gap Year can presents some drawbacks. Indeed, if you go abroad you have to be well-organized. Furthermore, some students go to non profit making organization. This is not the goal of a Gap Year in which the schemes should be helpful for both. Some people are most interested in travelling than in helping local people.
