        Notion 1:                      Spaces & Exchanges

        I've picked up the notion of spaces & exchanges and I'm going to try to give my idea through the study of the relationships between India and the UK. In other words, that notion deals with the links between several territories and what they can bring to each other or worse, what they can steal to anotherone. That's why I'm going to wander if living together in harmony despite differences is a utopia. In order to answer to that question, the relationships and exchanges between India and GB during the colonization period will be studied first. Then, I'll try to focus on the relationships and exchanges during the mass migration to the UK after 1947, to finally analyze the come back of the NRI to the homecountry.

        First, let's deal with the British settlers' attitude in India during colonization. At that time, it could definitely be said that Great Britain looted India. As a matter of fact, though the British brought their culture and imposed their westerner's way of living to India, they also took the opportunity to rob India's resources such as gold, cotton, or spices… Today, the hints of Britain in India can still be seen, the Indian currency is still marked with the face of the British queen, Indian people are now used to eat food from west.. etc

        As it is said in the document “India.”Jewel of the British empire that I studied, India was under the direct control of the British Crown.  

        In addition, the extract “East meets West” we read from the novel “A passage to India”(Forster, 1924)  underlined the contrast between the 2 cultures: English people weren't used to rubbing shoulders with the Indians and treated them really scornfully.  That idea of pride from the English settlers can also be seen in the movie “A passage from India”.

        

        Now let's focus on the integration of the Indians in Britain since India's independence (which was in 1947). I've first seen in the trailer of “Brick Lane that foreigners who moved to England had to adapt to its culture. However, that seems seems quite difficult as they also want or are asked to keep their traditions;
