SYNTHESIS FILE: ‘EQUALITIES AND INEQUALITIES’: ARE INEQUALITIES IN THE UK

Those documents deal with what disabled people undergo in their daily life but also at work. People with disabilities take part of our society. They want to live fully and to be useful. But they face barriers because of their difficult conditions of lives. Are disabled people really integrated into our society?

People should be valued by their work and effort not by their disabilities. Unfortunately, it’s not always the case. In this 3rd April, 2017 BBC article, we talk about six keys areas where we can found discriminations. Among them, we talk about disability discrimination at work. The report founds an inadequacy of equal opportunities. Major disabled people aged 16-24 had the lowest salaries. In another document, we can see the boss preventing the disabled person from entering the company. Whereas a ‘non-disabled’ person is seating and working on his desk. There is also a poster indicating a prohibition for wheelchair’s users.

Among the six ‘key areas’ evocated in the first document, we can find ‘care and health’. In fact, the second and third documents (an article and a cartoon) deal with disability discrimination in daily life. Shona COBB, a young adult of 19 talks about her difficulties with her handicap on her wheelchair. She asked for a wheelchair ramp (an assistance) for her travel on train, but no train company agent help her to get on it despite their obligations. She had the same problem with bus drivers who refuse wheelchair users in London, while all the stations are already not accessible. She was obligated to ask foreigners to help her. The document 3 highlights also this kind of situations:  in fact, a woman is waiting on the quay to get on the train but nothing is adapted to her disability. So she doesn’t have access as non-disabled people. (Doc2) No changing room adapted for disabled people at a London’s clothing store. Shona evoke also the shame to assume the disability at the beginning.

Whereas we talked about inequalities at work and in health and care (with Shona COBB), this time we will talk about inequalities in the standard of living. In fact, the document five which is a film report deal with Harry, 14, who live in limiting conditions because of his handicap. As his mother takes care always of him, she cannot have a job. Nevertheless, without job, there will be not enough incomes to pay the debts; Harry’s family live in worse conditions unlike families that do not have disabled members.

As a conclusion, we are able to note that there is a true unfair system toward people with a handicap. They cannot benefit of their rights. Disabled people are excluded from society: people considered them like ‘abnormal’ persons. But we try to find solutions to those inequalities: it’s require a huge change, in particular in public places. Maybe the government should add more amenities for disabled people.
