Since the dawn of time, we have noted the importance of tourism all over the world. Already during the Renaissance, young Italian bourgeois and artists undertook their initiatory journey across the globe in order to extend their culture and their knowledge. Tourism is therefore most often beneficial because it brings countries an undeniable economic and cultural asset.

Firstly, when we talk about tourism these days, the first thing that comes to mind is the turnover it can generate in the country. Indeed, when traveling abroad, we see that people tend to spend their savings more than usual. They visit, discover, are interested and buy, which constitutes a considerable income to the country since it contributes to the increase of the GDP. Many modest businesses can afloat only thanks to the existence of tourism, this is the case for instance of the city of Venice in Italy or that of Athens in Greece. The presence of tourists then becomes essential.

In addition, the presence of travellers is beneficial to a country from a cultural point of view. It is true that their presence in another nation can allow them to evolve intellectually and spiritually by opening up to new cultures and traditions. So, we move away from the ethnocentrism that poisons our societies and that turns us in on ourselves. We can then take a step back and perhaps become more humble. Furthermore, allowing travellers to learn more about a country will guarantee a complete interest in it and will bring it even more fame.

To put in a nutshell, we can’t deny the capital importance that tourism plays in the life of a country and even more from a financial and cultural point of view. Its reciprocity in its benefit lets us consider that tourism is something that should be encouraged. Allowing travellers to contribute to the life and reputation of a country then becomes a priority, but one question remains unanswered; that of its consequences. So what about it? Is tourism so positive for the environment or for the permanent inhabitants of tourist sites?
