Do you think wokism is still relevant today?
"The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice." Throught this quote, Martin Luther King emphasized the shits in values and mindset that should continue in the next few years. Actually, this period goes with the apparition of wokism in other world the awareness about the situation we live , in this case racial inequality . However, even though wokism was historically relevant to struggle for racial inequality , it leads nowadays to many excesses about freedom of expression but also on economy with positive discrimination.
Firstly, wokism played an essential role in the history of racial inequality. Indeed, it gave to black people new rights such as civil rights act in 1964 that abolished segregation between black and white or Voting rights act which enabled black people to express their opinion through voting. Thus, the concept of wokism played an important role for black people emancipation. In the light of all this events, we could consider that wokism is a great thing that could still be relevant in our western societies
Nevertheless, wokism has lost its meaning nowadays. Indeed, it is used by the companies to gain money instead to gain rights. In this sense, the companies use wokism for advertising, they make something that we could call “woke washing” (for the same purpose as “green washing”). For instance, Nikes promoted in 2018 their products through the figure of Colin Kaepernick, a NFL players, who engaged himself against police violence. This choice made their profits increased by 31% the next week thanks to the image he reflected.
Furthermore, wokism is currently used as a tool to prevent people from expressing themselves. In fact, people destroy Freedom of expression on behalf of wokism. For example, at Yale university, one teacher was fired for having said that we can wear stereotypical costumes like a Mexican with a moustache.
Consequently, the more important the wokism becomes, the more dangerous it is.
