The Hate U Give – Summary Book

It’s a story about a black girl, Starr who has to alternate between the poor neighborhood of her childhood (where she lives) and her rich school.

One day, she went to a party in Garden High. But suddenly gunshot from a gang fight interrupt the party. Khalil, Starr’s childhood friend decided take her home. On their way they had been arrested by the police. Khalil kept asking question to the white police officer of the reason of them arrestment. The police officer asks him to not move until he comes back. But Khalil move for checking on Starr. The police officer shoots him bc et thought that Khalil was armed.

Starr’s uncle Carlos, who is also a police officer, encourages her to give her statement to the detectives investigating. Starr goes with her mother Lisa but her interview was around Khalil and his connection to gangs and drug dealing. There are no questions about the police officer.

At Khalil’s funerial Starr met April Ofrah a lawyer and activist who pushed her to talk in a interview. King, the leader of a local gang called the King Lords, also interrupts the funeral and places a gray bandanna on Khalil's coffin, signifying Khalil's membership in the King Lords.  Lack of justice for Khalil’s death leads to protests and later riots in Garden Heights.

One day, Carter, a member of the King Lords named DeVante begs Maverick (Starr’s father) to help him to leave the gang. DeVante explain to Starr that Khalil has never been in the King Lords, he just protects his mother by selling drugs bc her mother stole money to King.

During Starr interview about the crime, she denounced the truth about the drugs traffic. King was angry and want his revenge. So during a manifestation Starr and her friend went to her father’s store. Indeed, the police came during the manifestation and put gaz. But during they were in, King put fire. But Maverick was able to sabe them.
