Hello, my name is “...” and today I’m going to present my portfolio. In America, according to the 14th amendment of the US constitution, “No state shall deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the law [...] nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.” Meaning that until the people who are charged with any type of crime get a fair trial with the right procedures, no one can be punished. Although this amendment exists, statistics show a great amount of racial disparities in the US judicial system. A study quoted by the Brennan center for justice shows that “Even when 2 defendants committed the same crime, black defendants are 30% more likely to be sent to jail”. In other studies, it is shown that ppl from a poor background and/or minorities are more likely to be convicted.
We can then ask ourselves, what is the reality of systemic racism in the USA ?
First, I’m going to define what systemic racism is along with some examples. In the second part, I’m going to show how it is portrayed throughout the documents, and finally what are the consequences of it.
