Barbie is a cultural icon which was created in 1945 by Ruth Handler. Ruth Handler was born in Poland. She immigrated in the United States. She could not attend University. She started as a secretary and when she was thirty, she created the brand we know today. Ruth Handller was inspired by a swiss doll which was called Bild Lilli. It was a sex symbol. For the name of the doll, she was inspired by her daughter Barbara. The company is called Mattel.

The company is going to be in constant evolution, in fact it is going to be marketed worldwide by making partnerships with Disney for example.

In 1959, the doll was unveiled , introduced , showed to the public. The first Barbie cost 3 dollars.

She mirrored the make up the haircut and the fashion of its time. barbies are part of diversity and inclusion.

Diversity and inclusion is about capturing the uniqueness of the individual; creating an environment that values and respects individuals for their talents, skills and abilities to the benefit of the collective

The question will arise as to whether the influence of barbies is positive or not for children? How do Barbies relate to diversity and inclusion?

first of all, the barbie represented the fact that women had choices and they could be who she wanted.

Barbie represents the women’s ability to work and to be autonomous.

However, mentalities have changed and so did the symbol of Barbie. Little girls can compare themselves to the doll but the problem is that the Barbie is not real

she can be good for the imagination but she doesn’t represent the average woman.

the size and the shapes of the doll are unrealistic.Little girls and boys are influenced by barbie. they want a skinny body and her perfect life which lowers their body esteem. they are looking at an idea that they can't reach.

Moreover, the Barbie is controversial nowadays.

she is controversial because it is a cliché , a stereotype.

It shows a false and unrealistic image of the woman.

the Barbie creates some insecurities for little girls.

Indeed, she is the embodiment of success and beauty standards. The little girls will have a complex about their physical appearance already at a very young age.

In addition to being self-conscious, this will affect the mental and physical health of the child. From a marketing point of view, children will ask their parents to buy them so for the brand it's a jackpot!

Mattel is trying to develop diversity and inclusion by creating new Barbies. Since 1980, there is a Barbie for almost every ethnic group in the world. She has multiple jobs and professions such as: doctor or teacher to take advantage of the talent, skills of the individual.

To conclude, the influence of Barbies on children is negative. Bad repercussions will be made on the child in the future.
