HOW DOES AN AGE-OLD COMMUNITY FACE 21st CENTURY CHALLENGES ?

The Amish community, which has existed since about the 17th century, is a group of people living in the same way as when it was created.

That is, they live an identical life to centuries ago.

It is a community living mainly in the United States (Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania) which isolates itself from the outside world and closes in on itself.

Strict rules must then be respected.

For example, it is forbidden to use cars, smartphones, televisions, electricity...

These are people who live simply, dress plainly, use horse-drawn carriages or occupy old trades: farmers, shop-owners, barn builders...

But the community must now face the 21st century, full of innovations, especially technological ones.

In fact, more and more young Amish decide that changes can be made in the community, without changing its customs.

This is the new generation of Amish people wanting to open up to the world and resort to the modern technology.

This old community starts to need all the new technology we are going through now.

For example, being able to get around by car can be beneficial on a professional level ( to work farther away in the city…).

It is the same for the internet, phones or computers : it offers a better professional life and business opportunities for Amish entrepreneurs.

Teens are also developing a need to be connected to the modern world in their social lives to meet new people or stay in touch with loved ones.

This new aspect of the community is constantly evolving and the use of the new technologies is becoming commonplace.

Yet, most of the former Amish do not agree with these modern changes and believe they are destroying their culture.

Various fears are building on their side about the control they could no longer have over the new generation using the Internet, especially with pornography, the lack of development of reflection or contact with non-Amish people.

This new century is having an impact on the age-old community, bringing about essential changes that can create disagreements within the community.
