TE attendue pour la question 4 : Puerto Rico has a special status because it is not an independent country but a territory of the United States. It is controlled by the federal government, which makes important decisions for the island. However, many Americans ignore this situation and do not fully understand Puerto Rico’s political reality.
Puerto Ricans are U.S. citizens and can even serve in the army, but they do not have the same rights as people living in U.S. states. For example, they pay certain taxes, like Social Security and other federal contributions, even if they don’t always pay federal income tax.
Despite this, they have very limited political representation: they cannot vote for the U.S. president and do not have voting members in Congress.
So overall, Puerto Rico’s situation is often described as unfair: it is under U.S. authority but without full rights or equal representation.
