An astronaut’s daily routine on the ISS:

First, the astronaut wakes up and eats breakfast. Their meal is composed of a tortilla with peanut butter, honey, jam… It is very similar to what we eat on Earth, except that they have to be careful with crumbs. Moreover, the food is dry and has to be rehydrated to be eaten. It is also soggy and has extra flavor.

Afterward, they clean their teeth and clean-up before starting their work day. There is no running water on the ISS, and the astronauts can’t spit in a sink, so they have to swallow their tooth-paste. On top of that, they can’t take a shower, they have to use wipes / a piece of cloth, some water from a pouch (a plastic bag), and some soap.

When they’re done with the morning routine, they can start their work day. They plan experiments, they do all sorts of tests, they study the effects of the lack of gravity on various things, and finally they send the results to ground control.

To relax after work they exercise for 2 hours on different machines. For example, they can run on tread mills, they can lift weights, etc… Working out in Space is different because of weightlessness. They have to attach themselves to the machine otherwise they would just float.

Before going to sleep, they switch to their Space pajamas and they can enjoy the view, chat with their families, play games…

Sleeping in Space is also kind of strange. With no gravity, the astronauts don’t need a bed, or a pillow. They are simply strapped inside a sleeping bag in a small cabin.
