Seats and forms of power:

Introduction : Seats and forms of power is in politics and social science. Power is the ability to influence people's behaviour. In order to live together members of a community accept rules, regulations, laws. This helps to create social cohesion but can also lead to conflicts and tensions. To illustrate this, I will tell you about the sixties and the pirate radio

Document 1 : This document is a cover of The Time magazine published April 1966 (one thousand nine hundred and sixty nine). It is entitled « London : The swinging City ». The page is divided into 2 (two) parts . On the first hand we can see the house of Parliament, the Prime Minister… they represent the traditional London and the older aspect of the society. On the other hand there are elements that illustrate the quick changes that were happening at this time : we can see a man who is doing drugs, a girl going at a night club, the singer of a famous rock band (The Who), people wearing flashy colors and dancing. This part illustrates the new London.

London represents a place of power with these changes since the sixties, it is a large metropolis at the forefront of technology and fashion. This evolution changed the lives of Londoners and increased their comfort of life and habits. Thanks to this document we also see the old London which allows the reader to be faced with this change. The monuments are replaced by clubs, bingo… This also shows the change of envy of the population.

Document 2 : In the sixties, the pirate radio was the only mean to fight against the domination of the BBC. They were formed by activists who broke the law to broadcast Rock’n’Roll. The british people started to discover this music which was at first banned. The DJ’s were brave and daring because they challenged the restriction imposed by the BBC and stood up against its monopole. They broke the law to broadcast a new kind of music.

This document clearly shows the notion of power of a small community of the world ready to fight for its freedom of listening. The English people show in this document that they do not want to let this be done by the state. They faced the domination of the BBC and their music that does not bother politicians because Rock'n'roll was considered as a music rather violent, which does not respect the laws and which gives the people a reflection of this rebellion.

Conclusion : To conclude, the sixties clearly show the evolution of power with changes in life and rebellion for freedom and for a comfort of life that lived up to expectations after the war. For me it is very important not to remain pacifist in the face of cultural restrictions.
