I. Presentation of the company

DreamWorks Animation SKG Inc. is an American company, which is producing animated movies, television program and online virtual worlds. Steven Spielberg, Dave Geffen and Jeffrey Katzenberg founded the company in 1994, in Glendale, California. Each partners invested an amount of 33 millions dollars in the company. This is how DreamWorks became rapidly involved in the animated movies, software, toys and records production.

At the beginning, the company was focusing on the production of serious animated movies. However the company built its success with its recent movies, which were more focusing on humor and satire.

The company created a worldwide awareness with some successful movies such as Shrek, Madagascar, Kung-Fu Panda and so on. Besides, when they are launched, DreamWorks’ movies are often ranked in the top 10 movies in the box-office. The presence of DreamWorks worldwide is assured by distribution agencies, such as Paramount pictures, and it is also a key of DreamWorks’ success.

II. What does it look like to work in this company?

1. Company values

DreamWorks represents today one of the most respected entertainment companies in the world. Among several specific characteristics it has a unique culture:

Emphasizing the innovation, DreamWorks was the first to use animated software. The company always tries new technologies into its project, the latest one is the HP Cloud Services, renown to build the next generation of web services.

To always stay at the top, the firm has created a really special work environment where creativity is prioritized. Any single employees, even lawyers and accountants, are implicated in the process of giving new, cool and fun ideas. Points concerned all what could develop the company from movie ideas to better plan for developing new products. The recruitment is also based on this sense; level on creativity overrides the technical capacities.

Last but not least, DreamWorks’ collective is a preponderant aspect of the company culture. It is favorite though everyday collaboration and teamwork. There are its principal characteristics: to begin, the working dress code is very casual putting everyone at ease and keeping the high pressure of this rapid-growing company as low as possible. Then, face-to-face interactions are encourage at work and considered as essential, the famous cold calling is banished. More everyone have the obligation to listen others and respect each idea. This concept engages the employee into the corporate culture and allows building an membership feeling, the company becomes a second family.

This talk can be illustrated by the daily actions lead by DreamWorks as the preference to take risks and learning from mistakes rather than firing staff or the offer of artistic courses to the employee to develop their creative feeling.

Through its culture, DreamWorks increases the trust of its employees. Offering them several services put at disposal, it creates strong loyalty and dedication. Finally, it is important to notice the equality politics toward workers, who are all, considered important and precious, that reinforce the authenticity of the relations.

2. Company employees

When you talk with a DreamWorks employee, one thing came out every time: more than anywhere, the pride to work into this company. It is interesting to see the reasons that enhance this particular feeling.

The first one is: the prestige to work in a company created by a genius person in term of imagination, and where the recruitment is strongly competitive. This fact does not prevent, workers to consider being a part of a big family: even though they are 2,100 persons, they feel as if they were 100.

To continue, employees describe their working environment as hard working and fun, where all are implicated in every creative and artistic side, even if it is not its main sector of activity. They are committed in the main objective: imagination. This also implies huge amount of work, exceeding 10 hours a day, which is a common things there.

More, workers are invited to give propositions, take risks and propose solution efforts and enhance innovation and new stuff even though all their projects are not successes. It gives the company a more challenging and entrepreneurship aspect, where the creativity and differentiation prime.

Finally, to put down the pressure, employees are always fairly treated. Their wellbeing is put forward physically and professionally while having specific services available. Among them: free lunch and breakfast, relaxing environment and atmosphere with landscaped mountain,
