THE ART OF WELCOMING – VOCAULARY

All-inclusive/include (tout inclus): all the hotel’s services are included in the package holiday (accommodation, breakfast, lunch, dinner, drinks and sometimes even activities).

Deposit (Arrhes ou Acompte): sums of money that the customer pays the provider to guarantee a reservation. But the difference between Arrhes (you agree on the amount you must pay to create a contract which guarantees a performance and it is an advance payment) and Acompte (money paid in advance to guarantee a reservation but which obliges the customers to pay the full amount, even in the case of a cancellation) in French is huge.

Back to back: booked by a travel agent with the hotel and are based on a contract. Individual or group stays from Saturday to Saturday and new consumers replace them.

Bed and breakfast: a hotel that includes a room and breakfast.

Vacant/departure (blanc): room in a hotel ready for a new customer

Occupied room/stay over: when the room is occupied but the room has to be clean. Nevertheless it takes less time.

Cardex/Kardex (fiche client): customer fills with personal details which don’t have to be forget for the next time. It can make the difference.

Check-in (arrive/enregistrement): it means both the client’s arrival and the administrative procedures undertaken by the receptionist.

Check-out (depart): terms use during the process of departure.

Conference: where a specialist present their research without public participation. One room, large or small is normally all that is required.

Convention (congrès): a variety of specialists will talk during the event in front of a large number of participants. Several hotels in a big city may be needed to accommodate all the delegates.

 

Day use: room which is rented out for use during the day.

Debtor/city ledger (débiteur): a client who does not settle their account at check out. Their company will pay later.

Desk/Front desk/Front office/Reception (reception): the office which do check-ins and check outs as well as helping the customer during their stay.

Fam trip/Familiarization trip (eductour): Trip with various services offer by an union of hoteliers, a town or a tourist information office and sell in the area (travel agents) or write positive reviews (journalists).

Full board/American plan (pension complete): includes breakfast, lunch and dinner and maybe drinks.

Guest (hote/client): customer or client

Half Board/modified American plan (demi-pension): includes breakfast end either lunch or dinner.

Incentive tour: Trip designed to motivate and reward the employees of a company.

Incoming agency (réceptif): specialist agency, local expert which will work for a tour operator to reserve the required services for their clients.

King size: size of the bed, double bed measuring 2 meters by 2 meters.
