The muckrakers were reporters, author or journalist who bring awareness to the dirt or the muck in society. They bring attention to American people that may not know of some of these problems. Lewis Hine a photojournalist captured child labor and shows those kids working in coal mines and factories. This helped pave the way for child labor laws across the country. Ida Tarbell expose the ruthless business tactics of the standard Oil Company in a series of articles published in 1904, these articles were so damaging that the Supreme Court case split up the oil Company. Jacob Riis, in his book How the Other half lives, was able to expose the living conditions of the urban poor and show literally how the other half lives. As a result, New York City past building codes to promote safety and health. Upton Sinclair with his book The Jungle it investigates the dangerous working conditions and unsanitary procedures in the meatpacking industry of Chicago.
