currently enrolled in a two-year distance learning program in Communications and Advertising. I plan to take the
national exam in May 2011 to obtain my diploma. The field of communication has always interested me because
we are deeply involved in a business or association and also in direct contact with the client. We create
newsletters, brochures, marketing campaigns, white papers and reports which keep the public informed about the
activities in which we are involved. After I obtain my diploma, I would like to work in an art museum or a Non-
Governmental Organization.
Well, I’m now going to present the documents in the file I was given. The file consists of a news report about a
company called Snacks and Sodas, about chart and some photographs which are mainly graphic illustrations for
the report.
The bar chart is entitled US Obesity Rates Reach Epidemic Proportions. It emphatically shows that one American
in six is now overweight or obese. It also indicates that 30 to 40-year-old adults with type II diabetes have
increased 76% over the last twenty years. Lastly, the chart points out that 78% of Americans do not exercise
enough in their daily lives. 25% are even actually sedentary, meaning they spend most of their time either sitting or
lying down.
The report is about Snacks and Sodas, the world’s largest chain of junk food bars with snacks and drinks rich in
sugar, fat and preservatives. The headquarters is located in Atlanta, Georgia USA, and it has outlets all over the
world.
Currently Snacks and Sodas sells junk food in snack bars, suggesting a rather standardized, cheap and tacky
place. It sells unhealthy processed food “all you can eat” for a single price. This has led to customers overloading
their plates with food, washing it down with high-calorie sodas.
The main purpose of the report is to inform consumers about the company’s activities and evolution: it has closed
950 stores and laid off workers. However in the fall, the company plans to reopen 800 of the stores using a new
concept. Early retirement is encouraged but most employees will be able to go back to work if they choose when
the stores reopen. Meanwhile they will receive 80% of their salary and must attend coaching and refresher
courses. Those who seek work elsewhere will receive severance pay.
All right, you’ve finished your presentation, haven’t you? Now let me ask you some questions about
certain points in the documents. Firstly, what has incited the company to make changes?
