Banksy calls for shoplifters to rob Guess

Banksy, the worldwide known but anonymous British artist did not resist the urge to publicly broadcast a message on Instagram, accusing the brand of illegal use of his artwork.

It has been reported that the famous brand Guess has printed Banksy’s artwork on their clothing without his consent.

In response he publicly broadcast a message on Instagram, “attention to all shoplifters”, ironically telling thieves to rob merchandise that Guess made without asking permission to use his art.

However, Guess claimed that they had "Legal Rights" to use Banksy's work and the fashion retailer does not believe they have infringed on Banksy's work, saying their clothing line is inspired by the artist’s work, and not directly stealing. It is to profit and earn money from it that the known brand stole his work without his approval.

The graffiti artist whose main purpose is to deliver political, war critiques, capitalism messages to the public might have been displeased about this whole story, as it seems people are not getting what the messages behind his work truly are.

Instead, they use his art as a fashion trend without completely understanding it. Additionally, what inspires Banksy in his art is the world, it is through it that he explains his point of view of any situation, and when people use it as a trend, it must be disappointing to him.

« They helped themselves to my artwork without asking, how can it be wrong for you to do the same (…)? »
