TED talk “Inside the mind of a master procrastinator.”

It was a TED talk video named “Inside the mind of a master procrastinator.” The speaker introduces the subject by talking about his thesis. He says that he planned to write it step by step, but he ended up by writing it the day before the deadline because he is a procrastinator.

According to him the brain of the procrastinators is different from the non-procrastinators. Inside the brain of a non-procrastinator, there is a “rational decision maker” who leads. He makes long term plan and does whatever it makes sense to do now. Inside the brain of a procrastinator, there is also another character designed as “the instant gratification monkey”. He wants to have fun instead of working. He only care about easy and fun things. When the rational decision maker and the monkey are not agreed a conflict appears, and the monkey takes the place of the rational decision maker.

Then, the speaker wonders how a procrastinator manage to achieve his work. To explain why, he adds a third character, “the panic monster”. He comes up when the deadline approach. The monkey is terrified by him, so he runs away and let the rational decision maker regain control and achieve work.

But a problem persists. Indeed, when there is no deadline, there is no panic monster either. It is called the “long term procrastination”, it prevents us to progress in life. Everybody is a long-term procrastinator in a way, we all have dreams we don’t even start to chase.

To conclude the speaker show us a draw whit many boxes. Each box represents a week in an 80 years old person life. Then he ticks all the weeks already passed. At this moment we realize that there is not as much boxes as we thought. We don’t have really much time to achieve our dream.

I really enjoy this video because it made me think a lot about procrastination and my dreams. It pushes me to take good resolutions and be more active about my goals in life. Also, I found this video very entertaining and I liked the way each idea is symbolized by a funny character.
