York’s presentation

We are going to present York who is the Clark’s slave.

York was born in 1770, in the Caroline County near of Ladysmith, in Virginia. His family was enslaved by Clark’s family. York was the servant of Clark. He has a wife who saw rarely.

In 1804, Clark took his slave York, when he joined the Lewis and Clark expedition.

York was a large, strong man who shared the duties and risks of Lewis and Clark expedition. He helped thanks to his skill scouting, hunting and field medicine, as well as manual labor in extreme weather conditions. He used a firearm to hunt game such as buffalo, as well as for « protection ». He contributed just like the rest with fishing and putting tents. He was a good man; indeed he was concerned for the safety of everyone on the expedition. Furthermore, he also had a different side as a play-actor and practical joker.

He had a taste of what true freedom is like.

We have much information concerning the liberation of York.

The historian Robert BETTS says that York asked Clark for his freedom based upon his good services during the expedition. After many negotiations Clark eventually gave him his freedom.

According to yet another source, York continuated to work for Clark as slave after the expedition. He asked Clark about his freedom and at first Clark refused but did send him to Kentucky so he could be closer his wife.

Ten years later, Clark accorded York his freedom and he worked in the Freighting business in Kentucky.

He died in 1832 from cholera.

In memory of York, Ed Hamilton sculptured a statue of him in Louisville’s Riverfront Plazza/Belvedere. Another statue stands on the campus of Lewis and Clark college in Portland, Oregon.

Statues aren’t exactly described because we don’t have more details about his physical.

The poet Frank Walkerhas has written two books of poetry about York:

- Buffalo Dance : the journey of York (2004)

- When winter come : the ascension of York (2008)

Both books were published by the University of Kentucky Press.
