Divergent Volume 1 (first volume of the trilogy, there is also a derivative novel)

by Veronica Roth released in 2011

On Earth long after our era, a society is divided into five factions.

-Dauntless: those who blame cowardice

- Abnegation: those who blame selfishness

-Candor: those who blame duplicity

-Erudite: those who blame ignorance

-Amity: those who blame aggression

Beatrice Prior 16 years old is in a family of Abnegation, she does not feel out of place. Each member of the society at its 16 years old must choose in which faction they will live (whether they remain in their original faction with their family or they move to another faction.) To help them make this choice they have an intended test evaluated for them factions they are made. Beatrice's results are very surprising. His choice therefore becomes complicated. The faction she chooses will not be as perfect as she imagines. In addition, she must complete the initiation if she does not want to be factionless. Fortunately she can count on friends like the mysterious Four. But a threat hangs over her when we start to attack her old faction and her family, Beatrice will have to keep her secret by all means. Will she manage to keep it?

Will she join the returns of the faction she admires so much?

My opinion

The book was written in everyday language so it is easy to understand and even if you don't understand a certain word you can easily pick up the meaning of the sentence.

The main character is interesting, we have access to her thoughts which allows us to better understand her. The other characters are also interesting, they all have their own and different character. The choice of factions and their names is judicious indeed we could draw a parallel with our society even if we are not divided into factions, we can find them in our society with the different professions, the Candors will be associated with the person working in justice for example. I had seen the divergent films but had never read the books before. Reading the books allowed me to better understand Beatrice because we have access to her thoughts which is not really the case in the film. The book seems long but it is rather quick to read.

Overall it's a good book and I recommend it if you've seen the movies but not read the books yet, if you all like sci-fi, that's set in the future, or there's a bit of suspense this book is for you.

To rate the book here are my criteria

-the understanding of the book if it is easy or not

-characters

- the story, the theme

- my opinion

As I said I already know the story so on 4 stars I will give 3, I did not really fall in love with the book, but I strongly advise you to read it if you have seen movies.

Do not hesitate
