THE GENDER GAP IN NORTH COREA

North Korea is the most closed and militarized country in the world, It’s an authoritarian régime, they are cut off from the world, the government decide all in the life of their citizens. The oversight is present for everybody.

The law guarantee gender equality but it exists a big discrimination towards women because Korea is based on a philosophy conservatrice and patriarcal who men are more importance than women.

The role which is imposed to women by the State is to take care of children and always keep the house clean.

Household

At the level of the household and the family, only women take care of the house and the children before or after work, housework, laundry, take care of children’s meals, Man meanwhile lies on sofa watching television, at household man don’t do nothing.

Most women are forced to combine work and household choses at home. The North Korea Society expects that women do not make scandal or Harm to men and therefore that they remain subordinates, moreover it is not customary to leave a man whatever his behavior, despite of a formal legislative equality, North Korea society stay patriarcal.

Finally, women have the duty to take care of children and her house, only women. Women have the right to have maternity leaves on 90 days.

Work

Women are free to choose their job like nurse or touristic guide, they have the same wage than man according to what they say but North Korea is close to public so It’s complicated to know the truth.

However They don’t have access to job of responsibility, no job with high tank like military job or chief exécutive in big company. So they can work but with no responsibility and power.

In politics

In politic, only one woman have a place in government. This is the sister of the dictator Kim Jong Un, her name is Kim Yo Jong, she is the manager of the department of propaganda of North Korea labour party. She is the only one because she is the dictator’s sister. Women don’t have a high rank position in the national politic system, only men.

Education

The education system is under the of the State, education is free and compulsory for clever years, of 6 years to 17 years. The matters taught are maths, sport, draw, sciences and also the ideas of Kim II Sung, the dictator’s grandfather.

All children have the same uniforms with blue pants and skirt for girls white shirt and a red scarf.

Schools are not mixed, boys are only with boys and it’s the same for girls. There is 280 university mixed and the most popular is Th Kim II Sung university.

Emancipation

The right to vote for women was in 1946, women can vote like men since this date. For abortion, Since 1950, abortion was authorize up to seven months of pregnancy but in 2015, the dictator decide in a fit to madness as he usually does to forbid abortion and also any means of contraception for increase the birth rate in North Korea.

About driver’s licence, North Korean citizens don’t have the right to have a car, not even to drive a car, the only vehicles that you can see belong
