Why should young women in Canada become an entrepreneur?

We all agree that when it comes to entrepreneurship we all think one thing: it’s a man jobs. Well I will prove you wrong and show you that women can also become entrepreneur and the reasons why they should become one.

Reason number one is because the can represent a huge economic power and consumer insight. It’s been estimated that women contribute in excess of 20 trillion dollars in consumer spending every year, which represents a bigger growth market than China and India combined. Women also account for 85% of consumer market. Plus, a Boston Consulting Group did a study that with the power of the female consumer in mind, it’s evident that women are best placed to tap into opportunities and bring valuable consumer insight to the table. This mean that women are able to sell a product or close a deal with a customer more than men, so this can bring a lot to the table because women can make the money come in more than the men in the business world.

The second reason is the desire of independence. Many women see entrepreneurship as a source of empowerment and autonomy. Freelance photographer journalist Alma Ouattara says that it is the need to distance herself from hierarchical institutions that has led her into to entrepreneurship as well as the flexibility to work on projects she is interested in and in the way she wants. This means that more and more women want to break out of the hierarchical society compound and what to do what they please. As they should! We’ve been told more many years that women can’t do that or you should do this because that’s what society have told us and we followed it because of the fear of being judged or being an outcast. Moreover, Marcelle Govan, who leads a business support structure for hiring and retaining immigrant’s workers in Quebec, cites that the desire for independence resulted in wanting to “control what she represented and it’s results”, but also to manage her own time and schedule. We can agree that 99% of the population in the world works a 9-5 job, they have to work 8 hours a day for 5 days a week. Most of them can’t decide when to start and when to end, it’s their boss that have to decide for them, at what time they have to start and what time they have to finish, if they can have a day off and the numbers old days that they’re allowed to have for vacations. Being an entrepreneur means being your own boss, you decide at what you work, how many hours you will work, how may days of the week and can have be on vacation when we desire.

The third reason is that women strength in emotional intelligence is a competitive advantage. In recent years, leadership studies have found that having a high emotional intelligence quotient, also known as a EQ, is an important factor when it comes to leadership success. On top of that, studies have also found that women have a slight edge over men when it comes to EQ. In fact, a 2016 studies show that women score higher than men in almost all emotional intelligence competences. This goes with the first point, because as I said women have the upper hand when it comes to closing a deal or selling a product. However, I never told you why. Well the reason is because men, when it comes down to it, they get their emotional involves and when things don’t go their way, their emotions gets the best of them and instead of closing a deal with a customer, they lose a customer. I have been talking a lot about emotional intelligence and some of you don’t even know what it means. Well emotional intelligence is the ability to receive and understand both your emotions and the emotions of others and to use this information to help guide how you think and behave. In other words, emotional intelligence is about the ability to acknowledge and work with your feelings. When it comes to leadership, emotional intelligence means, having self-awarness and empathy, as well as the ability to listen. Which means that women can leverage their aptitude with emotional intelligence when it comes to leading their own companies.
