Dominants religions in the United Kingdom and Ireland

This map allows us to see that United Kingdom’s inhabitants doesn’t believe in the same religion. Indeed, according to the document, we can notice three main religions: Church of England in England, Calvinist in Scotland and finally Roman Catholic in Ireland.

Although United Kingdom can be considered as one country today, there is undoubtedly cultural differences that divide it, such as languages or, in this case, religions. Those differences can easily be explained by the country’s history.

For instance, the reason why Ireland is nowadays Catholic is because it has been evangelized during the Vth century, by St Patrick. Today, the 17th of March is a National Day, it justifies the fact that Catholic religion still have a great place in Ireland.

Then, Scotland has a different religion than England because of Viking’s invasions, which has deprived it from occidental Christianity’s influence. During the XVIth century, Scotland was an independent nation and, in 1659, John Knox, Jean Calvin’s follower, leaded a religious reform in the country. This was the beginning of the Calvinism in Scotland.

Finally, most of England’s inhabitants believe in Church of England. This protestant religion has been created and instituted by Henry VIII. Indeed, the king wanted to invalidate his wedding, and the pope refused. Because of this insult, he rejected Catholicism and wanted to remove pope’s influence form his country. This is why he turned England toward his own protestant religion: Church of England.

To conclude, even if this map basically reflects main religions in the UK, we can however notice that it’s not entirely the truth. Indeed, it doesn’t pay attention to differences in one country in particular. It also excludes minor religions of the country, while we know that today with immigration and emigration there is a huge cultural mix and melting pot.
