The fall of Ms. WALES

IFSI PARIS SAINT JOSEPH

We are Thursday fourth of January 2018 at the EHPAD St Simon in district XX. Madeline is a caregiver at the second floor. It’s now 12am, lunch time. All residents are at the restaurant waiting for food, but one is missing. Madeline can’t find Ms. WALES living on the floor she is affected. She goes towards the room number 212 to find her. In front of it, she knocks at the door.

Madeline: “- Hello Ms. Wales, it’s lunch time!

Ms. Wales: - Help me please! I’m on the bathroom. I fell on the floor, I can’t move.

Quickly Madeline went to the bathroom. She finds her on the floor, overthrown under the tap.

Madeline: - Do you fill any pain?

Ms. Wales: - My leg hurts, I feel awful.

        Madeline: - What happened?

Ms. Wales: - I just wanted to clean my hands before lunch. Suddenly I fell. I don’t know why. My son is going to be angry

Madeline: - Right, calm down, I’m here with you. I’m just going to call Nathalie the nurse. Are you alright with that?

Ms. Wales: - Are you going to come back?

Madeline: - Of course, I will take care of you. Give me one minute I will be back.

Ms. Wales: -  Alright but be fast please.”

Madeline realizes that she has no phone with her. She can’t call help. She decides to go to the nursing station. On the same floor. Julie and Ferris the nursing student were there on the computer.

Madeline: “- Julie please I need you now. I left Ms. Wales alone, she fell on the floor of her bathroom.

Julie stops her transmissions and asks the freshman, Ferris, to get ready to go with the caregiver.

Julie: - Alright Madeline. Is Ms. Wales aware? Is there severe trauma?

Madeline: - I didn’t see anything. I can’t move her because she is too heavy. I need help.

Julie: - Ferris, can you go help Madeline with Ms. Wales please. I will join you after I finished to write the sheet about fall. Do you know what to do in this situation, Ferris?

Ferris: - Yes, I have to move the resident, and help her sit on a chair, with respect of the rules for handling. I have to check all vitals parameters and look if there is any severe trauma. And I have to keep an eye on her health state during the afternoon.

Julie: - It’s true, but that’s not enough. You must to inform the doctor and the caregivers who are in charge of Ms. Wales. You have to fill the sheet of fall. It is necessary to have oral and written transmissions. You also have to call the resident’s family, particularly if the resident is going to the ER.

Madeline: - Come with me, and take the tensiometer and the saturation please.

Julie: - I will join you in a second.”

Madeline and Ferris enter in the Ms. Wales’s room

Madeline: “- Ms. Wales, Ferris the nursing student is going to check you vital parameters, is that okay for you?

Ms. Wales: - Yes of course!

Ferris: - Ms. Wales, can you lift your sleeve please, so I can put on the cuff

Ms. Wales did as told immediately.

Ms. Wales: - Oh I'm sorry to give you so much work I'm clumsy

Ferris: - Thank you. Oh no, don’t worry, on the contrary I am here to learn and to help you. Now, I will inflate the armband, so just relax and do not talk anymore please. Like that very good.

Julie enters in the room silently after knocking at the door and looks at Ferris taking the vital parameters.
