The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

book review

Don't panic. Although it may appear that a novel named Guide to the Galaxy will be giant, seemingly never-ending book (imagine how huge the universe is), it hasn't more than 140 pages. Douglas Adams originally wrote it as a radio comedy play, but in 1979 the first part of sci-fi satire pentalogy was published.

The book narrates adventures of Artur Philip Dent, whose life turns upside down the moment, when he finds himself standing in front of his house, wearing a bathrobe, watching his home being demolished by dozers – all of that several minutes before the Earth is destroyed to be replaced by intergalactic highway. However, Artur is rescued by his best friend Ford Prefect, who luckily turns out to be an alien hitchhiker.

The main character, Arthur, feels upset and depressed, because his home planet doesn't exist anymore. In addition, he is stuck in space with his easy-going alien friend and chased by Vogons, one of the most unpleasant races in the galaxy - not actually evil, but bad-tempered, bureaucratic, officious and callous, who are said to have "as much sex appeal as a road accident". Arthur is a little bit confused, whether seeing the mind-blowing universe or getting into incredible bizzare situations, but he still keeps his sense for British humour and sarcasm.

The story is written in er form with a plenty of funny, sometimes preposterous, dialogues. There is a various range of humorous, interesting and also weird characters, situation and twists. The plot might seem to be a little bit complicated, but author's style is so easy-going a humorous, that nobody even realizes it.

In my view, the book is very readable. Once you begin this novel, you will read it from cover to cover. I appreciate that the satire seems to be funny casually, almost by mistake, not by design. There is a plenty of stuffs that The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy can offer to readers.
One of them is a demonstration of the second worst poetry ever or answer to life, the universe and everything. It also brings an idea that whole universe is just an absurd joke.

I highly recommend the book to everyone who enjoys science-fiction and having a good laugh.
