Thanksgiving

The Pilgrim Fathers went to America to find religious freedoom. They sailed from Plymouth in England on September 16, 1620. Their ship was called the Mayflower. They landed at Plymouth Rock, near Boston, on December 26, 1620. They celebrated the first Thanksgiving in 121. The first winter had been very hard for the Pilgrims. Half of them start to death. Native Americans taught them how to survive in America. The Pilgrim Fathers had a great harvest the next year. They decided to thank God for it and to celebrate with a feast. They invited the Natives to share it with them. It was the first Thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving is always celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November. On Thanksgiving Day, people make a special Thanksgiving dinner. They have stuffed turkey with cranberry sauce, onions and sweet potatoes. Then, they have pumpink pie. They drink apple cider. Cornucopias and football are very popular on Thanksgiving Day! In New York, Macy's department store holds a famous parade!

The Thanksgiving meal is traditionally composed of a turkey, an animal just discovered by the first Europeans in the New World.Thanksgiving is celebrated with family around large dinners and happy meetings.The eve of Thanksgiving associations distribute meals to people homeless in large cities. In Canada, we also celebrate Thanksgiving, and the tradition has roughly the same origin as that of the United States, that is to say that we thank the land for the good harvests it has given. Only Canadians celebrate Thanksgiving every second Monday in October. The first Thanksgiving celebration in Canada was proclaimed in 1799 to celebrate the royal events and the end of the war. But the date has changed again year by year, until 1931 when it was decided to fix it on the second Monday of October
