The three documents that compose my synthesis deal with the theme of art and protest.

Document A is a film review written by Owen Gleiberman and published in 2019. This review is about the movie “Sorry we missed you” produced by Ken Loach. This movie is a real criticism of capitalism and the gig economy suffered by Ricky and his family who are struggling to make ends meet and is depending on the gig economy.

Document B is an extract from the novel Sky Hooks, written by Nell Campbell and published in 2016. In this extract, the narrator explains his daily life working in a warehouse and how he ended up working in it.

Concerning document C, it is a mural by Banksy produced in 2016 which depicts a man holding a brush and a bucket and standing next to a graffiti: “Follow your Dreams”. This graffiti has a red stamp on it over which we can read “Cancelled”.

We may wonder how British artists document modern-day economic and social issues.

First I’d like to demonstrate that the three documents all feature the gig economy. This will lead me to explain in a second and final part the social and emotional impact of it.

First I would like to show that the gig economy is omnipresent in the three documents and impact everyone.

First of all, the documents deal with the gig economy and capitalism. In document A, the author explains that the protagonist of the movie has done many odd jobs which is by definition the gig economy: “plumbing, construction, gardening [...] delivery van driver for PDF”. In the same way, in document B, the narrator work in a warehouse which is characterized by repetitive tasks. As for document C, the man seems to be from the middle class as we can see by his clothes, and in all documents, they do a job with few responsibilities.

All three documents are 21st-century documents and show that this system touches everyone from all over the world regardless of their age, nationality, or gender. Indeed, in the first document, the author mentions that the movie is about “what’s going on in people’s everyday lives - not just in England ”(l.3-4). As for the second document, on line 18, the narrator mentions his work colleagues who came from different backgrounds, one coming from a fairly high-responsibility job who worked for the television: “one of them was a Rugby League linesman. I’d recognized him once on telly. Another one always used to tell me about his fishing trips to Denmarks”. Plus the narrator is educated and has been to college but still ends up in this situation. Concerning the third document, we don’t know the nationality of the man holding the brush or his social background but he seems quite old, around 40 years old, similarly, in document A, Ricky is a father and therefore also rather old. However, in document C, the narrator seems to be young as he mentioned college.

In addition, these jobs are not a choice for none of the characters. Indeed, in document A, Ricky’s family is “mired in debts” (l.14), and has no other choice but to work as much as he can to pay off his debts. Similarly, in document B, the narrator clearly mentions that this work in a warehouse is not a deliberate choice: “they make you make you take a job you wouldn’t normally want to do” ( l.22-23); Finally in document C, the man
