Should Students Have To Wear Uniforms ?

Do you think you would feel better going to a school where everyone is dressed the same as you?

It is actually a tradition in Great Britain for students to wear uniforms at school.

According to a survey on RTL radio, 67 percent of the french would prefer to use uniforms in schools. Based on my personal experiences in life, I totally agree that it's much better to wear uniforms at school.

There are many reasons why students should wear a uniform to go to school.

Firstly, it makes everyone socially equal. The students' parents earn different amounts. Not everyone can afford a lot of clothes, or a certain pair of shoes, a variety of brands... The school itself can be expensive, thus making it more difficult for parents to afford expensive and « fashionable » clothes. So, the children go to school with a variety of quality, prices of clothes, and brands. By the appearance, we can see ( aproximitavely) the social class. And sometimes, this causes bad consequences ( for example, critisism or rejection of a pupil ). Uniforms make students equal. There are no differences between their appearances. That stops rejections, conflicts, and problems coming from someone's clothing.

Nowadays, students judge the look of other students by their clothes, glasses, haircut, shoes, brands... The pupil's critics can offend the victims, lead to a lack of self-confidence, stress, depression, missing school and in the extreme consequences, to suicide. With uniforms, social class, and brands of clothes cannot be seen. The use of uniforms is essential for the students's wellbeing, for their school years to be better, less stressful. It is crazy that critics on what you wear, leads, for some adolescents, to death. Just as you don't judge a book by its cover, uniforms could teach some pupils that you do not judge by appearance.

Because of uniforms, there can't be any competition because of what you wear. Uniforms give us self-confidence and a feeling of unity. You cannot be rejected by your look, thanks to uniforms.

School learners are usually more confident with what they wear, or look like, with uniforms, and so they're doubly more confident.

A different reason, is that uniforms are often better quality than casual clothes ; they are cheaper for families (parents). The option is not only economic, but it is also ecologic. You buy two sets of uniforms, and your wardrobe is ready for the year. Because there is less fabrication of outfits, it is more ecologic for nature. You can pass your uniforms to your little brother or sister, there is neither wasting of money, nor clothes.

It has been studied that if we wear uniforms, it will reduce bullying, crime, and misbehaviour :

The U.S. Department of Education made a research and concluded that uniforms improve the diminuation of violence, crime, and other bad consequences ( kids' tension of coming to school without a certain branded product : sneakers, t-shirt...).

« In the year following the establishment of the uniform policy, Long Beach school officials found that overall school crime decreased 36 percent. Fights decreased 51 percent, sex offenses
