I'm going to talk about the notion of idea of progress. To star with i'd like to give a definition of progress can be defined as an improvement, a development or a change which contributes to making the world a better place in terms of science, technology, modernization and quality of life.  But progress can be see in social terms, for example the situation of black American in USA was very bad some years ago while today everybody have the same rights. We may wonder what is the evolution of the black American's situation since segregation ?

First of all, I will present the situation of black American during segregation and the different main way of protest, then I will analyse the situation of Black people today. For that I will use a video on civil right movement, a text about malcom X and Martin Luther King, and a cartoon of Obama’s inauguration

Firstly, after  slavery, a lot of people may well have thought that the condition of African Americans would be better.  But, some laws like laws of Jim Crow were created at the end of the 19th century make differences between Black And White people. In fact, they were separeted in public places like schools, public transport, toilets. These laws were created generally in southern states to reduce the rights of black Americans. Everything was made to separate Black and White.

Because of this, a lot of people fight againt this discrimination.  A woman is known in particular to have made opposition to this discrimination. Her name is Rosa Parks, she became an iconic figure of the fight against the racial segregation in the United States. Indeed, she refuses to obey the bus driver who asks her to leave his place to a White and to go to sit down at the back of the bus. After this opposition, Rosa Parks was arreested. To support her, the Blaks people boycotted the bus during one year. There is also Martin Luther King who is an iconic figure of the fight for peace against the segregation with is famous speach «  I have a dream » wich persuaded the nation of the necessity of equal rights for everybody. And recommended non violent resistance. Or on the contrary Malcom X, who had him spirit of vengeance against the whites, and recommended the violence. A lot of people fight to do progress the black american's situation.

Finally, The black people in managed to obtain one, more or less, equality with white. A certain freedom, as wished it all the great men who fought against the segregation. Today, black people and withe people are not anymore separate in public places. Finally, black Americans managed to obtain recognition as can be seen in a cartoon of Obama’s inauguration as the president. He is surrounded by Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther King and Obama is telling them he couldn’t be here without them. This caricature shows that the election of Obama as a president was an incredible victory for Blacks who started as slaves and now have reached the highest position of the country.

To conclude, we can say that the history of black Americans had been long and difficult.Today, the black american's situation has progressed blacks have more rights and freedom in USA.
