Notion idea of progress

The Idea of Progress is the theory that the different advances in technology, science, and

social organization can produce an improvement in the human condition. That is, people can

become happier in terms of quality of life through economic development and the application

of science and technology (scientific progress).

The idea of progress basically consists in believing that the world can become better in terms.

 As the rhythm of progress seems to have accelerated these last few decades with an ever

faster increase of major technological and scientific breakthrough, the cult of progress is now

being questioned. Indeed, a growing number of people voice their concern about the ethical,

social and environmental consequences of such development and about the excesses of today's consumer society .

Progress implies change and evolution and throughout history most of the advances have been

positive. However the rhythm of progress seems to have accelerated over the last few decades

and the technological breakthroughs and scientific developments are causing some people to

question this progress. I have chosen to deal with this question: How does the evolution of the

society influence family structures and mentalities ?

To begin, I’m going to talk about the traditional family. One of the characteristics of the

family traditional is the big family with many children. There are advantages and the

disadvantages of the big family. A big family was hard to manage but a

child like to have several brothers or sisters to play. On the

other hand, people who defend the values of traditional family feel that women should

stay at home and take care of the house while men work, this people are against

abortion.

Now, we will look at the evolutions and the new family structures. We saw in class that

the family structures has much evolved during the 20th century and after the second

world war there have been many changes, not only society and family but also the

role of women in society, like in the work . Indeed in the second part of the 20th century,

women are almost on an equal footing with men and obtained more and more rights like

the voting right. In the 50s economic growth and reconstruction of the American

economy impact directly on the American society and the family structures.

This is how the modern family appeared. Actually the society has

evolved and we can see family with the same sex parents, Inconceivable thing 50 years

ago. We can see more and more blended family. In class we worked on the blended

family and we saw that to live in a blended family can have disadvantages. Indeed in the

blended family it's hard to manage when a parent has just arrived and that there are
