The idea of progress

The idea of progress can be defined as an improvement, a development or a change, a technical, scientific or social advance which contributes to making the world a better place. I'm going to deal with the India case and the development of new technologies and science. Thus we can ask is the progress is always beneficial? First we’re going to see the evolution of the India society, then the development of new technologies.

Firstly, many changes have occurred in India. In fact we constat that India is a country on the march. Indeed, it is an emerging country become very important in global governance. The population has increased rapidly. India is the fast-growing country and his population is expected to overtake China population size by 2030. Also the needy are less numerous than thirty years ago even though many Indians still live below the poverty line in dreadful conditions. Nowadays fewer people are poverty-stricken. In 2005, 42% of Indians lived on less than 80p a day whereas in 1981 there was 80%. In 2014, India is the 10th world economic power and India’s GDP has kept growing at an animal rate of 8%.

India has become a high-tech country with numerous futuristic city and highly qualified entrepeneurs. A city like Gurgaon is building shopping malls, hotels and will soon be ready to accommodate international enterprises. Also, the development of the enterprises is favoured by the microcredit. It consist in granting small loans to people who can’t get loans from traditional banks because they are too poor. This system enable a lot of Indian people to start their own business.

In the second place, we saw many documents who deal with the development of new technologies and science which are creating to improve the life of the citizens. On the one hand, there is the creation of intelligent machine like the robots who are able to see and hear better than humans. They can obey and speak, the smartphone for example and thanks to the scientific progress, there are a lot of breakthrough who permit to always improve their capacities. But maybe in the  future, it could have drawbacks because , many humans could lose their jobs because the robots are more faster, they never get tired and they already replace factory worker. Also, many persons can become very addicted to this kind of technologies like the teenagers with their iphone or android phone.

On the other hand, we studied the PGD (Pre-implantation genetic diagnosis) which had  numerous advantages. In fact, this is a procedure which allows doctors to choose the healthiest embryos for the IVF. Moreover, thanks to the PGD, we can for exemple save people by transplanting a bone marrow from a transplant candidate to an another patient, helping the families to be sure that their child will not suffer from a sever disease and choose the characteristics of their futur child. However, the dark side of this progress is that it is dangerous. If the families are beginning to  choose the baby they want: his features, the sexe it’s against nature and and this poses an ethical problem for the population. It may have a hierarchy with a first-class of citizens and a second-class who is genetically engineered.

To conclude, progress is set up to improve the lives of citizens but sometimes this is not always favorable. India is a country on the march who became a high-tech city. But that’s only one part of the population because a lot of people still live in poverty and dirt.  The development of new technologies and science can also permit to help some people but they causes problems. That’s why in my opinion, progress is very important for the society but it must be very supervised.
