Idea of progress

I am going to talk about the notion of progress. First of all i would like to give a definition of progress . The idea of progress can be defined as an improvement, a development or a change which contributes to making the world a better place. The notion of progress includes all factors involved in the evolution of societies and individuals. It’s why we are going to ask how have inequalities been reduced within societies. To know it we will take the example of the United States to find out how the equality between blacks and whites has been improved. Then, in a second step, we will see example of India.

In the United States, many inequalities persist between blacks and whites but the blacks were heard by movments against segregation. Rosa Parks is one of the emblematic figures of Civil Rights Movments by her actions against the segregation. The document « the seamtress » shows us Rosa Parks, who cost two pieces of cloth that refer to the union of blacks and whites. Rosa Parks has become the symbol of the evolution of society because she never gave up fighting and she gave hope to blacks to achieve equality.

But inequalities do not only translate into a skin color. India is a country that suffer from inequalities. Indeed, we saw that were four castes in India : Sudras, Brahmans, Vaisyas and Kshatryas. We are talking about another caste that would not be integrated into society and not considered part of the human society. Touching them would be dirty. It’s the Dalits. They do all the work nobody wants to do and are victims of discrimination. The Dalits are poor, systematically abused, oppressed, exploited and not mutch access to decent education and employment. To reduce these inequalities India has put in place quotas for the Dalits can integrate schools. Furthermore there are more inter-caste marriages. The document « changing india » puts forward the improvements in India. Women who were victims of inequality can now work more and bring back money. There has also been the emergence of phones and cars more efficient and young people have more opportunities to do what they want because before they had to fire the job that their parents were doing.

To conclude, we have seen that many inequalities were present within societies whether between blacks and whites , between men and women or between castes. Movements have been put in place to deal with these inequalities and shows that each person can be as powerful as another and have the same rights.
