The idea of progress

Hello, i'm here today to speak to you about the notion Idea of progress.Progress is the action of moving forward, to become better. For a company, progress is the evolution in the direction of improvement towards more knowledge and hapiness. The culte of novetly is very present today, as evidence by the need for a large number of people to be at the peak of fashion or technology.Progress is at the heart of our societies. In class, we have especially illustarted this notion with the example of telecommuting. Telecommuting refers to the ability for people to work from home. With, generally speaking, just a computer, they achieve the tasks they would have done at the office. So escaping from a stressful working

environment represents a step forward, so it definitely relates to the idea of progress. So we can ask if is telecommuting improving our lives ?

To begin with, i will deal with the Information Technologies wich allows new opportunities. Telecommuting is becoming more and more mainstream in the USA but it seens that some employers and employees are still reluctant to work from home. It isn't developping as fast as it could. Some companies and the federal government give the opportunity to their employees ti telework more and more easily. For example, Fuertek is a virtual company founded by Laura Schoope in 2011. All the employees have to telecommute because there is no office building, tat's why Laura Schoope says it's a virtual company. Telecommuting has many advantages. The employees work better because they are more productive and more loyal, they can organize their schedules as they want. Telecommuting make it possible for employees to have more time for their personal and their family life so it enables them to balance their professional and personal life. It's good for employers too. Indeed, they don't have to buy an office building, to pay for electricity and heating , so running the compnay is cheaper. Finally the service for the clients is as good as in a more traditionnal firm.Large and small companies let some of their workers telecommute. In 2008, 1/3 of companies allow employees to telework. The Telework Enhencement Act seems to have triggered an upward trend. It would be interesting to know why all the people who can telework don't : maybe they want to meet their co-workers, or it may be difficult   for them to have a flat or a house big enough to set an office, or it may be an hindrance to career advancement. The employers may be reluctant to let them work remotely  because they may fear they might be less productive.

Then, i will mention the impact of telecommuting on daily routines and lifestyle. Telecommuting can be the solution to many problems because its enables people to organize their times as they want. For example, it make it possible for parents to attend their kids' baseball match. Jason Fried says : «I got nothing done today » when he talks about his work in office. Most of managers think teleworkers are more efficient when they work from home than they work at the workplace.  Teleworking han an economic impact for the workers : they can find a job more easily. Besides teleworkers don't have to go to commute, so they don't spend money on transports, they can save money. Telecommuting also benefits company managers : they don't have to pay for bif office building, so it cuts costs. As workers are satisfed with their jobs, so the employee retention is better.
