Primer:

Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel, known as Coco Chanel was born on August 19th, 1883 in Saumur and died on January 10th, 1971 in Paris. She was a famous french milliner and designer, known for her creations of fashion and perfume. She set up the Fashion House Chanel, "symbol of French elegance."

Her Childhood:

Her family was itinerant merchants. She had a sad childhood, her mother died while she was still very young, and her father abandoned her when she was 12 years old. So she grew up in an orphanage with her 2 sisters. When she was 18, Gabrielle learnt to sew with the nuns at the orphenage. Since this moment , her main purpose in life was to become rich and to climb the social ladder. Her fight started.

Her rise :

In 1910 Coco Chanel opened her first boutique rue Cambon in Paris, whose boyfriend Capel loaned her money to start her business. She began selling hats and her boutique was so famous that she decided to open another one in Deauville the same year. The second boutique was another great success.

In 1915 she opened a third shop in Biarritz, this boutique was her first real fashion house.

From 1921, next to the luxurious Vendôme Place, Coco Chanel bought 3 other numbers in Cambon Street. The Fashion House Chanel is still at the same address today !

Coco Chanel owned her Fabrics Factories in Normandy and joined with Bourjois company to sell her perfumes.

In 1939, she was at the head of a big company : 4 000 employees who provided 28 000 orders per year.

Her work:

For a country girl who started out with nothing, Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel managed to create an empire that is still here, more than 40 years after her death. A century ago, the Chanel brand had only one shop. Today, there are more than 300 stores around the world. It is thanks to her impressive tenacity that the young woman managed to revolutionize the dress codes in the first half of the 20th century. She created new clothes such as the sailor, the trousers for women, the tweed suit or coco suit and the fluid dress. she freeded women from the frilly and corsets and created full other clothes.

The perfume Chanel N°5 became the most famous and sold perfume in the world.

Her style was copied in all over the world. She dressed the french actresses of the time, including Romy Schneider and Jeanne Moreau. Jackie Kennedy was also wearing a pink Chanel suit when John F.Kennedy was shooted.

Thanks to her fight for the emancipation of 20th century women in fashion and her permanent creativity for elegance, the Fashion House Chanel is one of the best-known luxury brands in the world.

Rebelliousness, freedom, passion and allure were the 4 pillars which governed Gabrielle Chanel’s life, refusing to depend on anyone’s ressources. She founded her house alone, fought to be successful and won her freedom. Gabrielle put the work above all, the condition according to her, for success and sustainability.
