Globalization or globalisation is the process of interaction and integration among people, companies, and governments worldwide.

First of all, we can observe the disappearance of certain local traditions and many cultural legacies due to globalization. For example, languages like Welsh or Gaelic lost most of their native speakers during the last decade while English was taking over. This kind of situation can be caused by cultural and economic standardization, shown by the presence of common signs like transnational firms (such as the company Apple) or fast-foods chains. Thus, most of worldwide cities lost their identity trying to unify their way of living with the modern ways of other developed countries.

But globalization doesn't have only negative effects.

Indeed, it promotes the expansion of culture overseas. Ireland can be a great illustration of this, thanks to the development of local music groups like U2 or the popularization of the local beer Guinness which used globalization to expand their influence. In fact, the constant sharing of culture is a wonderful consequence of the extension of human fluxes. Nowadays, cultural barriers are constantly broken thanks to the perpetual mingle of population and the evolution of technology. Communities’ Folklore is now an art that can be shared everywhere. De facto, Cities which showcase a high level of immigration are prone to the presence a many different cultures; over time, populations settle and create their own homogeneous culture while keeping the roots of the original ones.

To conclude, we think that globalization has mainly positive effects but can still, in some cases, be a burden on certain local identities that get lost in the standardization of mainstream lifestyles.
