Role-Play

Parent : I hope you are doing your homework!

Teenager 1 : Sorry, Dad, I'm busy. I'm in the middle of a game.

Parent : A game ? Again ! you already spend a lot of time on your computer. It's not good for you.

Teenager 1 : Just 5 more minutes and I'm finished. Please ! I can't quit now.

Parent : You always say that. Honestly, I think you're addicted. You have become aggressive recently, and your school results have decreased.

Teenager 1 : I know, but video games aren't dangerous. On the contrary, they help me relax after school and improve my reflexes and strategy. They are good for me.Furthrmore, it’s a nice way to make new friends.

Parent : Maybe, but your video games have many problems. You have a lot of friends online, but you don’t really know them. They're probably not even real.

Teenager 1 : I understand, but why don’t you bother my brother? It’s him who spends all his time on social media!

Parent : Okay, I will go see what he is doing.

Teenager 2 : Hi Dad.

Parent : Your brother told me you are addicted to social media.

Teenager 2 : That’s not true. Yes, I use my phone a lot, but it helps me stay in touch with my friends. We talk about school or family problems. We help each other, for example, with school lessons. I also use it to stay informed about the news. It helps me communicate better. And it’s true, it’s also a way for me to relax.

Parent : Maybe, but you spend too much time on your phones. Because of these games and social networks, we never spend time together anymore. You always stay in your rooms. Why can’t we play a board game or go for a walk as a family ? And online, you can easily see bad things or post something without thinking. Right, call your brother, we have to speak every 3.

Teenager 2 : What already

Parent : You are every 2, addicted to technology and it’s very big problem.

Teenager 1 : Video games is just another activity.

Parent: That’s enough! I’m tired of seeing you on your screens all day. I have decided: this summer , you will both go to a camp for one month. I watched in internet, it’s camp without phones, computers, internet. A real digital break.

Teenager 2 : What? One month? You can’t do that! All my friends will be online That’s too much!

Teenager 1 : My brother is right, Dad. It’s too strict. We can find another way. We are not bad kids. Let’s make a deal.

Parent : A deal? I’m listening.

Teenager 2 : We can make some rules together. For example, we can use our phones or play games only at certain times.

Teenager 1 : Yes! We can give you our phones and controllers while we do our homework. We will stop using screens after 9 PM. We also promise to have dinner with you every evening, without phones. Please, let us show you that we can be responsible.

Parent : All right. This is your last chance. No screens during meals or after 9 PM, and homework in first. I will also install parental control on your phones and computers to check your screen time. But if you break the rules or your marks don’t get better, you’ll go to camp next summer. Is that clear?
