We are going to talk about the right for women to have control over their own bodies, the title of the campaign is “your body, your choice, your rights!” which is a feminist slogan used as a protest to improve access to safe, and to supports women and girls to make decisions about their bodies. And the cartoon we chose focuses on abortion rights. So, the cartoon was created in 2018 by a Swiss artist named Hermann which is political cartoonist known for his minimalist and provoking drawings about politics but especially human rights. This cartoon was made during a very important moment in ireland’s history : during the referendum about legalizing abortion.

Description:

In this cartoon, we can see a red shop with two big windows and a closed door in the middle. At the top, there is a sign that says: Referundum on abortion in irelande. In the left window, we see a sweater, with a label that says “irish sweater handmade”. Under the sweater there are balls of woon, and everything looks like a normal store.

But in the right window, things are different, the label says: Irish abortion handmade. And there is nothing but two hangers hanging from the bar, which is a shocking contrast between something normal and traditional and something illegal. We can also notice a woman walking past the store and staring at the window, alone, and dressed in black, maybe to represents the solitude women often have to face in these situations.

Conclusion

This cartoon is a strong message that shows the reality that many women still have to deal with in many parts of the world. 40% Of women live in countries where abortion is not accessible In Burkina Faso, women can be refused contraceptives at health clinics unless they are with their husband. Until that moment in ireland, abortion was still completely illegal even in cases of rape or dangers to the woman’s life.
