Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela born 18 July 1918 in Mvezo and died December 5, 2013 in Johannesburg (Gauteng) is a South African statesman; it was one of the historic leaders of the struggle against the institutional political system of racial segregation (apartheid) before becoming president of South Africa from 1994 to 1999, following the first non-racial national elections the country's history.

Nelson Mandela joined the African National Congress in 19431, to fight against the political domination of the white minority and racial segregation led by it. Became a lawyer, he participated in non-violent struggle against apartheid laws, introduced by the National Party government from 1948 August 5, 1962, he was arrested by South African police on indication CIA and is sentenced to prison and hard labor for life at the Rivonia Trial. Therefore, it becomes a symbol of the struggle for racial equality and has a growing international support.

Nelson Mandela became the first black president of South Africa in 1994 and pursued a policy of national reconciliation between blacks and whites; he struggles against economic inequality, but neglects the fight against AIDS, growing in South Africa. After a single term, he retired from active political life, but continues to publicly support the African National Congress while condemning its excesses.
