/ GRETA THUNBERG AND THE DEBATE OVER BREXIT

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2019/aug/17/greta-thunberg-brexit-culture-war-nigel-farage

The debate over Brexit which started in 2016 is still curent today. In May 2019, Teresa May resigned from her Prime Minister role because she didn’t manage to find an agreement between the MPs and the European Union on the place of UK in the EU. Contrary to Theresa May, the new Prime Minister Boris Johnson definitely wants to make it happen. While the British governement is changing, the awareness about the climate change crisis is increasing thanks to social media and eco-warriors. The article which I chose comes from The Guardian.

The most famous female eco-warrior nowadays is Greta Thunberg. Her age and her straight-talk make her really special. She accuses politicians on the climatical warning frequently and, as a consequence, some of them are not happy with it. She’s not the first woman who is offended by politicians for her fight.

In the case of the environmental crisis, powerful men prefer to keep their easy life rather than make some small effort for the planet.

This need to change our living habits is an urgency on the scale of humanity, but the British government does seem unconcerned : the Brexit debate is officially the principal problem, whereas they are not arguing anymore on its merits. On the one hand, the different British parties leaders are just attacking each other by public intimidation. On the other hand, they agree on the fact that the 16-year-old girl activist is annoying. Her small age and the fact that she has Asperger make her inattackable. Greta Thunberg has also a lot of admirors, because of her bravery.

This divergence of minds about Greta Thunberg and the climate crisis slows down the changing life habits that we have become aware of. Nevertheless, the children are more concerned about the idea of a life enviromentally friendly because they understand that their future is questionned.

/ DEMONSTRATIONS IN HONG KONG

https://www.nytimes.com/2019/08/08/world/asia/hong-kong-protests-explained.html

Since the British empire gave it back to China in 1997, Hong Kong is a semiautonomous territory. It’s half controlled by a chinese policy called « one country, two systems ». Since then, Hong Kong was living peacefully with China. The Hong Kong’s population have more rights than the Chinese. They are more and more feeling that the Beijing governenment is trying to get closer to Hong Kong.

But in June, a bill generated a huge demonstration in Hong Kong. The demonstration started in February when a law, made by pro Beinjing, passed, this bill allows people accused of crimes to be sent to places with which Hong Kong has no extradition treaty, and those can be in China. On the 9th June, a demonstration against the bill gathered people of all ages.

The demonstration continues because of the violence of the police that is using pepper spray to disperse protesters. Hong Kong’s atmosphere is tense ; the chief executive Mrs. Lam suspended the bill but she didn’t withdraw it entirely.

Most of the demonstrators are non-violent ; for example, there was a pacifist demonstration the 16 June which gathered 2 million people. However, there are more and more clashes between the police and the crowd : a minority of people attacked the demonstrators but the police didn’t arrest them and that shocked Hong Kong’s public opinion. The demonstrations are now diverse and well-organised.

China is asking for more calm in Hong Kong but doesn’t act directly. For her part, Mrs. Lam doesn’t answer the dispute, she won’t suspend the bill. Hong Kong’s politicians are hiding the fact that they asked China to have a military help to stop the violence demonstration.

This situation calls into question the relation between Beijing, Hong Kong and people who live in Hong Kong. A law for its independence can be expected.

/ TRUMP’S BILL AGAINST ASYLUM SEEKERS

https://www.nytimes.com/2019/08/16/us/politics/asylum-rules-migrants.html?rref=collection/timestopic/Trump,%20Donald%20J.

It is a well-known fact that Donald Trump never stops showing his aim of closing United States’s borders. The first step of his fight is accomplished. A federal appeals court announced that some migrants can be blocked from applying for asylum in the United States, but only in states along Mexico. This article comes from the NewYorkTimes.

In New Mexico and Texas, this rule prohibites protection to migrants who haven’t tried (and failed) to get an asylum right in one or several countries that they traveled through. In July, the public opinion had learnt, by a lower court, that Trump’s administration had probably violated the procedure of that new regulation. So, it has been suspended.

At frist, this regulation had to be applied all over the country but the appeals court said California and Arizona, which are on the Ninth Circuit, must be spared. The only states where the rules are in effect is New Mexico.

Lee Gelernt, the lead lawyer for the American Civil Liberties Union in the legal challenge to the asylum rules, is against this regulation because he considers that this rule is illegal.

This trial of a new regulation proves that Trump hasn’t given up his idea of closing American borders. This desire could make more jobs for Americans and so develops the American economy, which is more and more confronted with China’s power.

/ ABORTION ALABAMA ROE V WADE

https://www.washingtonpost.com/outlook/2019/05/14/alabamas-abortion-bill-is-not-about-alabama-its-about-tossing-roe-v-wade/

It cannot be not denied that feminism grows more and more nowadays. The movement #Metoo created by Tarana Burke in 2007, had continued with Alyssa Milano in 2017 by encouraging women to express their bad experiences. Nevertheless, the opening of women in society is regressing because a low in Alabama prohibits abortion in all cases, even rape and incest. This law can be argued at the Supreme Court with the aim of banning abortion all over the United States. The article I chose is from the Washington Post.
