Increasing sensitivity for the protection of the annimals

Why do some people stop eating meat? Some people stop eating meat to defend their ideas. The idea of killing animals for food is unbearable for them. So they can't eat meat. Sometimes they refuse to eat meat because they have been shocked by videos about the bad living conditions of animals in factory farms.

83% of French people are in favour of banning intensive livestock farming, which aims to increase productivity by shortening the animal's growth phases or using reduced space. In our country, around 80% of animals are reared in this way, which completely denies their character as living beings endowed with sensitivity.

Growing sensitivity for environmental protection

Others are stopping meat because they think that the farms are a threat to our environment. Because feeding the animals we eat requires us to produce huge amounts of food. Four out of five farmlands are now used to grow grain for animals. These lands were created by razing entire forests, depriving wildlife of their habitat and threatening their survival. To produce this food, very large amounts of water are needed. More vegetables, less meat? People who stop eating meat make us think about what is on our plates. This reflection encourages some people to eat more vegetables and less meat... Or to eat less often, to treat themselves only to excellent quality meat. There are more and more restaurants, recipes and tips for eating without meat. In France, a vegetarian meal is even offered every week in the canteen.

Meat is getting more and more expensive

More than half of the French (56%) say they eat less meat "compared to the last few years", mainly for economic reasons.

In January 2011, a report by economist Philippe Chalmin for the Ministry of Agriculture established the level of the increase in beef prices at 24% over 10 years.

Meat is the most expensive food. We can still find low-cost meat, but consumers are becoming more and more informed about production methods. They therefore know that this meat is of poor quality and that the animal from which this meat comes was probably raised in poor conditions. People are trying to eat better and more responsibly, that's why they don't buy this type of meat. And organic meat is too expensive.

People are trying to eat healthy

Thus, according to the first study of food ethics, conducted by the Observatoire ¬société et consommation (Obsoco), 82% of French people feel that they pay more attention to their diet than they did three years ago. "Quality is increasingly popular with consumers. They want food that does them no harm and gives them health benefits," comments Philippe Moati, co-president of Obsoco. A trend confirmed by a survey carried out exclusively by Toluna for LSA. Healthy eating is a primary concern since 7 out of 10 French people say they are sensitive to it today. Whether it is for reasons of fitness, well-being or health, a large majority is looking for healthy foods, seasonal fruits and vegetables, products with less fat, less sugar and less salt.

More and more people are following a vegetarian diet.

For all the reasons mentioned above, more and more people are turning to vegetarianism. There are more and more alternatives and that is why artificial meat has developed and attracts more and more people. It can also allow those who have a certain nostalgia for meat to find a similar product but without meat.
