Recent studies have shown that

baby talk, or more accurately

Infant Directed Speech (IDS), may

provide a vital bridge in language

acquisition for infants. IDS,

characterized by its simple words

and exaggerated intonations, is

common to almost all cultures, but

the purposes of this seemingly

universal phenomenon have until

recently been unknown.

FMRI scans of mothers with

preverbal infants listening to

recorded IDS sounds have shown

increased activity in the language

centres of the brain; a reaction not

present in fathers, or childless

women when similarly stimulated.
