Opinion essay

Nowadays, it becomes possible for some types of work to be done at home thanks to modern technology. This essay will firstly discuss, how having the possibility of working at home improves the employee’s work environment as the biggest advantage. On balance I argue that working from home leads to less distinction between work and personal life as the primary disadvantage.

On the one hand, the main benefit of working at home is the ability to work at ease in your own space without having to move to an office every day which can cost you money and time. You can save a lot of money and time that based-office workers will spend on getting to or of the work when your office is right in your house, avoiding in this situation stress caused by traffic jam or long distance. Moreover you will concentrate easily on your work without your colleagues dropping by and chatting with you. That would increase the productivity of remote workers. For instance, studies done in 2018 in Stanford University showed that the productivity of remote workers is higher by 40% than office-based.

On the other hand, I believe that working from home has more drawbacks than working in an office, in fact, the major disadvantage of being a remote worker is the absence of an obvious division between the personal and professional life; some remote workers who can’t set boundaries of work and stick to them are likely to be overworking themselves. “It’s hard to find a perfect balance between your duties at home and your work, you have to be very organized and know how to manage your time if you want to work from home successfully “says Jabir Khalil cofounder of Marmora. Furthermore working in an office can be very important to one‘s personal development as it helps you to get in touch with other colleagues and to take benefit of their experiences and advices.

In conclusion working at home, offers a good working environment, saves you money, time and increases your work efficiency. However its inherent flaw as it is hard to equilibrate between work and personal life at home. By taking all of these factors into account, you can be sure to make the right decision for you and your career.
