First, Google hopes its autonomous car that can reduce accidents and fatalities and shorten commute times, and advance the quality of life for the blind and disabled. Second, google has experienced in hardware development. Global auto industry still increase. To be specific, in emerged markets such as the US and Europe the sales come from replacement of owned vehicle. Otherwise, in the emerging markets the increasing middle class contributes to the sales. This investment can assist Google in data collection to support its core search business and create a new way for profitability if Google can embed its services in to vehicle, riding with the growth of car sales.

Q2.

Radical innovation means exploring new technology with high uncertainty. It focuses on products or services within unprecedented performances that possibly change the existing markets or industry and probably create new markets. Google car can be a radical innovative creation because it is willing to transform the vehicle industry by creating a fully autonomous vehicle system within using video cameras, radar sensors, ultrasonic detectors and GPS, inertial measurement unit, and wheel encoder, and a lidar. Although many manufacturers invest in this area, drivers need to control the vehicle. The strategic alliance can be used for the innovation. Although google has business in hardware part, its core business is search. Acting in alliance with the manufacturers can reduce costs of innovation and leverage experiences of alliances in vehicle industry.

Q3.

Google should choose ally with other manufactures which developing self-driving cars. Many manufacturers use similar components to build up their own self-driving system. The core competitiveness for Google is about search and software. Vehicle industry is a new area for Google. Collaborating with the existing manufacturers can reduce the entry barriers and leverage the partners’ supplier chain for arguing low cost for component. The challenges Google car are the changing in map and braking situation in traffic. These can be overcame by collaboration with existing human directed system. Furthermore, the partnership empowers the lobbyists to persuade the administration and legislature to change laws and regulations for self-driving cars.

Q4.

Google’s competitive advantage is collection of user data. Google maintains data warehouse centers around the world, which has potential to provide service to clients in most locations worldwide. Google maps can provide directions, search, location services, and traffic information. Collaborating with Android, Google car can record how fast traffic moving and calculate the most effective route.
