What are the differences between Blablacar and Uber?

BlaBlaCar is an online marketplace for carpooling.

Uber is a peer-to-peer ridesharing, food delivery, and transportation network company

Are these 2 companies the same size?

In order to compare the size of these two companies, we can perform an analysis of their turnover, market valuation, number of users and their international presence.

We quickly realize that Blablacar and Uber do not box in the same category, Blablacar has a turnover of about 80 million euros in 2015 while Uber has generated 6.1 billion euros 1 year later (2016). In financial markets, Blablacar has a valuation of 1.6 billion in 2017 while Uber was valued at 62.5 billion dollars in 2015.

Moreover, the American company is present in 51 countries in the world in 2015 when Blablacar is now present in 22 countries.

Finally, Blablacar has about 60 million members and generates 18 million passengers per quarter while Uber has about 40 million users per month.

Do they have the same business model?

Today in France, we use the term "uberisation" to designate breakthrough innovations.

Nevertheless, is Uber really an innovative company? The comparison with Blablacar is significant. Uber has simply benefited from liberalization and questioning of regulations while Blablacar has pointed out the needs of unsatisfied consumers and creating a new demand and that is why Blablacar is a more innovative company than Uber. The French company does not only serve customers who would otherwise have taken the train or hitchhiked, it also serves people who would probably have stayed at home.

In addition, Blablacar is remunerated through commissions paid by each passenger for 30% of the price offered by the driver. The American company is paid on the salary of the driver.

In summary, Uber is a commercial company while Blablacar is a collaborative economy company.

Do they have the same activity?

Uber and Blablacar have one thing in common. The 2 companies have a transport activity. Then there are the conditions that are different. On the one hand, Blablacar connects a driver with passengers to carpool. No driver is professional, none are employees of the French start-up.

Uber, on the other hand, offers a transport service with a professional driver. They are not really Uber employees but are still professional drivers.

The second big difference is that Blablacar offers much longer intercity journeys than Uber's urban transport.

Which distribution channels?

The distribution channels of Blablacar and Uber are identicals, it is their mobile application and website that are strategic for both companies because it allows them to connect drivers and passengers.
