They arrived from China to San Francisco Bay in 1933. In those days all Chinese prospective immigrants had to go to an immigration centre on the West Coast. She was seven at the time. During the trip, which lasted several weeks, she felt full of hopes. However, on arrival her feelings changed. They had to wait for days before the immigration examination took place. She waited with other women in barracks. All around her women were crying and complaining. Already they were missing their homeland. They didn’t know if they would be deported or not. It was humiliating. At last the fateful day had come/came and they were accepted. As she left the barracks at last, she saw her father who was waiting for them on the peer.

1. General comprehension

a) It is a first-person narrative. / An extract from a novel. (1 point)

b) The events are taking place in 1933 in the Immigration Station for Chinese immigrants on Angel Island, in San Francisco Bay.

c) The people mentioned are Li Keng Wong (the narrator), then her mother and her older sister (called Li Hong), also her father as well as the guards, the men and women in the barracks. (2 points)

e. On arrival the characters are divided between the “high hopes” of staying in the USA, and the fear of “getting deported”. (2 points)

f. In the second paragraph (lines 3-4) we see how “shameful” it would be for the Chinese people to be refused entry. The word “shame” is repeated indicating their obsession. It seems that it is a question of self-esteem and they couldn’t endure the humiliation. Although there might also be a question of danger but the text doesn’t indicate this. (3 points)

3. From line 5 to line 15

g. Four elements in the third paragraph (lines 5-8) indicate that people lived like prisoners : they are locked up in barracks, those “have barred doors and windows” so they cannot escape, guards keep them in constantly, they have to wait for the authorities’ decision in the same way as a prisoner would wait for his fate and would have no control over his life. (4 points)

h. In lines 9-15, a few details indicate that the events are seen through the eyes of a child. She would like to do something, instead of that she has to wait. She has nothing to do. She cannot play : “we had no books to read and no toys to play with” (line 10). She doesn’t even have to rehearse the questioning as she knows already the questions and the answers. (3 points)

4. From line 16 to the end

i. The family members were questioned according to their age. The inspectors were trying to find out if anyone was lying or not so they interrogated them separately. The father was questioned for two days, the mother for one day, the older sister for two hours. (3 points)

j. The Chinese named America “Gold Mountain”. It may refer to an aspect of the American dream of would-be immigrants which is that the USA is a land of economic prosperity. It might also refer to America being the place where you went to find gold. (3 points)
