Romeo and Juliet essay

Why have books been able to persist as a good form of entertainment time and time again even with the introduction of new technologies and brain stimulants? This question can be applied to the famous play by William Shakespeare “Romeo and Juliet” which has managed to endure as one of the greatest plays since 1595. Some of the elements that make it so compelling to readers across generations and continents are that the type of love in the play which is not based off sexual desire is so rare nowadays that it becomes a very compelling read, as well as it not only being a mushy love story but also a story with themes of adventure and hate making it more appealing to a more vast audience and also the fact that so many common day themes are still present in the play.

The idea of a love story that is not based on complete physical attraction is quite rare nowadays so its ability to stand out as a story of true love makes the play become quite a desirable read even to the younger audiences. Younger audiences are more stimulated by books about sexual attraction but because of that need for constant repetitive stimulation, always reading the same basis for love stories makes a story based on romantic love very intriguing. For example, when Juliet says, “Deny thy father and refuse thy name / or if thou wilt not, but be sworn my love / and I’ll no longer be a Capulet” (Shakespeare 2.2 34-36) she is expressing her romantic love for Romeo. In this quote Juliet is rejecting her Capulet name so that she can love Romeo who is a Montague. The reason this quotation explains how she has a romantic love for Romeo rather than a sexual one is because if they were only in love because of physical attraction there would be no need for a permanent declaration on Juliet’s part. Additionally, love stories are a tremendously common topic among teenagers so a true love story like Romeo and Juliet is a very attractive read allowing it to keep the throne as one of the best love stories. The reason Romeo and Juliet is considered a love story is because of this quote by Romeo at the end of the play when he is beside Juliet’s “dead” corpse: “Thus with a kiss I die” (Shakespeare, 5.3 120). In this quotation Romeo is about to kill himself because of remorse and wants to express his love to Juliet for the last time and it is the last thing he does. Many could say that this is not really the only thing that proves this is a love story but it is the most important because he is literally with her until death which is something many say but are not literally there. He does not just mourn in his room about her death but he goes to her “dead” corpse and confesses her love to her up until death. This proves that Romeo and Juliet really is an intense love story, hence appealing to the younger generations and why it has remained as such an appealing story. To conclude, Romeo and Juliet’s ability to differ itself from other love stories and prove itself as a true love story have allowed it to appeal to millions of readers and in the end making it remain as one of the best classics of all time.

Moreover, Romeo and Juliet has remained as a masterpiece throughout the years because it is not only a love story which helps make it more appealing to a more vast audience. The story has a lot of thrilling aspects integrated into it like murders and fighting. An example of fighting can be seen at the very beginning of the story: “‘Draw if you be men. Gregory, remember thy washing blow’ they fight” (Shakespeare, 1.1 56 - 57). At the time of that quote by Sampson, the servingmen of the two families are having a quarrel which ends up becoming a full blown fight. The fighting at the beginning of the play makes the play way more exciting and intrigues someone watching or reading the play much more than the beginning being some sad mourning lover.
