The Cold War was a political, economic and military struggle dominated by the United States and the Soviet Union.

In fact the Cold War took place between 1947-1991 in the political, economic and military struggle between the capitalist camp, dominated by the United States and the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, and the socialist camp, dominated by the Soviet Union and the Warsaw Pact.

The Beginning

Major events; Truman Doctrine, Marshall Plan, Iron Curtain speech

The Cold War began on 5 March 1946 with the Iron Curtain speech delivered by former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill at Fulton, USA. 12 March 1947 marked the beginning of the Cold War with the introduction of the Truman Doctrine in the USA, and the formation of the Warsaw Pact in 1955 marked the formation of the bipolar system. 1991 saw the dissolution of the Warsaw Pact and the subsequent collapse of the Soviet Union, signalling the failure of the Soviet model and the end of the bipolar system. Both countries have stockpiled large numbers of nuclear warheads, mutually assured of each other's destruction. After the end of the Cold War coupled with the previous ordeals of the First World War and the Second World War, the peoples of the world yearned for peace and opposed war.
